Those Rose Colored Glasses
I have new glasses, not exactly what you might think. These glasses are very special. They make things appear more colorful than they are. When sharing them with others can cause oooohs, and ahhhhhs! I'll return to the beginning.
Two years ago I began to plan a trip to New Jersey to visit my late husband's brother and wife, Brock and Peggy. I am not a good flier, and along with some health issues, emotionally I was not able to make the trip before now. In fact, until I crossed the threshold of the planethat day, I was not absolutely sure I was going to make it then. I am so proud of myself for accepting the challenge. We had been exchanging e-mails and one refered to making reservations for the broadway musical, Billy Elliott. It also stated something to the fact that I wouldn't even need my new glasses to see it?! That was perplexing, as I didn't have new glasses, that was until about two days later. I received this small box in the mail that day, and upon opening it, I saw this pair of sun glasses! For the life of me, I still couldn't figure this out. My next e-mail to Brock and Peggy stated I received a pair of rose colored glasses in the mail, and asked, are these the glasses you refered to? Brock's response was yes, but I thought they were pink?! I couldn't help but wonder what was going on. He was being so secretive, Peggy too. She knew about those glasses. But there I was left to ponder.
I had an idea it had something to do with the fall changing colors of the leaves, but I couldn't be sure. It was the first thing I asked about when they met me at the airport. One more time, I was right about something. They said the trees were just beginning to change and the rose colored glasses would make the colors more vibrant. They were absolutely right about that. We went on many drives to some of the many parks, the scenery was absolutely beautiful. I told them, "I can sure see why they call this The Garden State!"
This was just one small part of my trip. Thanks again, Brock and Peggy for such a memorable time, including those rose colored glasses, they certainly added to the overall anticipation and excitement of my trip.

Adventuresome Spirit
July 18, 2010
The following is a snippet from my journal.
I was viewing fb, and my daughter had complimented my adventuresome spirit, stemming from a photo posted by her daughter, Miche. The picture was of me jumping, or rather trying to jump on a trampoline. It was my first time, those of you that know me, know then, I waited a long time to try. It is a lot more difficult than it seems, but miche was right there holding my hands much like we do for small children learning to walk.
Aside from balance, the most challenging thing was to get both feet into the air at one time. You know the difficulty if you've ever watched a toddler try to jump. They use a lot of body motions, but their first efforts only allow one foot off the floor at a time. Much was the case in point. The difference being, I couldn't get either foot off. Yes, I did try it, and I'm glad I did!

Snuffen and Sniffen
Another story about Max, my lil dude with attitude! Max was not happy yesterday, I noticed it right after we returned home from the groomer. I don't know what the difference was, I took him the same place as always but his demeanor afterwards was much different. His face is so expressive and it was very sad, he didn't want to chase birds or bark at people on the mountain to let them know they were in his territory. He just laid on the floor or on his bed. I'm happy to report he is back to his regular self beginning early this morning. He probably had been awake for awhile, when I moved and that's all it takes. He had been on the foot of the bed and he ran up and pounced on my chest, all six pounds, eight ounces! If I hadn't been awake I was then!
After splashing my face with cold water to ward off the fog, I put on my sandals, still in my pajamas, and leaving the bed unmade Max and I fumbled (me,not Max) downstairs and outside. He took off for all his special places, checking every so often to see if I was still there. I was making this special Max time! And that's when I began observing him more closely. When he sniffs in the grass, he looks like a tiny little vacuum and he just goes along with his nose buried as deep in the grass as possible. Sometimes, like this morning, he snuffs ( blows through his nostrils hard) and afterwards he sniffs. He exhibits this little behavior anytime, but mostly outside.
We had delightful weather for coffee on the patio along with Max time. There was an intermittent cool breeze and Max was taking it all in. He would just let the wind blow on him and looking very intent on what he was doing, he did that snuffing thing and right afterwards would point his chin up and sniff the air a couple of times. He continued this for quite awhile. Then I had an awakening of a bygone memory. Some years ago, actually I could say a long time ago and be closer. Anyway, I received this very special gift of personalized perfume from Dick. What added to make it even more special was going to the perfumer. If you've never done this, give it a try! I had no idea what to expect, but enough to say it was an enjoyable time. Erne' was the owner and also the chemist in the shop. He asked quite a few questions of which I remember almost nothing, other than what my favorite flower was? After he got some ideas about me and what I liked and did not like he began giving me little strips of paper to sniff, either I liked them or I didn't. I was getting to the point of not really telling the differences between them and he gave me this little insight that I brought to mind watching Max. And that was between sniffing each strip, I was told to snuff or breathe out heavily through my nostrils. He informed me by doing that it would clear the olfactory organ of chemical sense in the nasal cavity. You know, he was right and now I know exactly what Max is doing as he goes about snuffen and a sniffen! He is clearing his olfactory organ so that he gets a better sense of smell. Smart dog, very smart dog because he didn't have to be told what or how to do this. He just knew!

Adventure, or A Very Scary Time, or Both?!
TOP PICTURE MAX
BOTTOM PICTURE PENNY
Returned home from vacation to Flagstaff and all is well. However, it didn't start that way. My friend, Shirley, my little dog Max and I drove to Pine, AZ to drop Max off for the week to be with his buddies Reggie, Molly and Penny for the time I would be gone. We arrived in time to have lunch with my sister, Jan before leaving. We went to the Randall House in Pine. A museum in its own right. We enjoyed the short time together and returned to Jan's to give Max one more goodbye. As always, when we entered the front door we were met with joyful barking and little dogs running about. Almost immediately Jan said, There's only three?!" Looking closer and checking behind the door, we found little Penny, unconscious! Jan picked her up immediately calling her name, and checking her vital signs. Her heart was faint and no sign of breathing, immediately she began resuscitation. Skills the Vet had instructed her in when Molly had pups just on the off chance one of them was not breathing when born. I don't know how Jan remained so calm. But she did, and just kept working on Penny while Shirley and I went to get Tom (her husband) at the Senior Center. I walked in, looked around but didn't see him. I then called out his name, he looked up, "We have an emergency with Penny!"
He said not a word to the others, just left to join me. I hurriedly tried to explain. He ran for his car because he knew he could get their quicker than we could. In fact, as we just turned onto their street we met them going the opposite direction, taking the little dog for emergency treatment. We found out later, by that time Penny was again breathing on her own! On their arrival, the office in Payson had already set up with oxygen and Vet waiting! But after the exam, there was not an exact diagnosis. They were told they did not know exactly what had caused the problem. It could have been her trachea, in which the yorkie and other small dogs are known to sometimes have a weakness, anxiety, or most likely an incidental seizure, meaning not something that would reoccur. We pray that is right. Penny is still recovering, just not as active and energetic little dog that she was before.
My little Max has demonstrated this trait with his trachea too, he didn't stop breathing, but I could tell he was struggling. It happened in the middle of the night a couple of weeks earlier and we made an emergency Vet trip first thing that morning. He was treated with antibiotics and cough suppressent. We return this next week for recheck, but he is doing well!
If you love animals and have pets of your own, you know exactly what we were all feeling!

Unknown Dangers or Risks
While I wrote this before I began blogging, it is just as meaningful now.
After viewing Facebook, my daughter, Michelle had complimented my adventuresome spirit. It stemmed from a photo posted by my grandaughter, Miche. I was on a trampoline! And it was my first attempt, I had waited a long time to try. The experience proved it was more difficult than it seems, but Miche was right there with me, holding my two hands much like we do for small children learning to walk.
Aside from balance, the most difficult things was to get my feet into the air. We've all watched a toddler try to jump. They use a lot of body motions, but their efforts only allow one foot off the floor at a time, much was the case for me. The difference being, I couldn't get either foot off. Yes, I did try and it evoked much laughter, but also a feeling of accomplishment.
After thinking about an adventuresome spirit, I am in full agreement. Just never really thought about it before. In fact, asked about it, my response would have been just the opposite. In my defense I will just mention a few experiences. I married when I was only eighteen and began the biggest adventure of my life. Drove alone with my sister to Augusta, Ga. to be with my new husband while he was in the US Army for basic training. I was the first of my siblings to leave our home state and live over a thousand miles away. I began college when the youngest of our five children started to kindergarten. I took up skiing late in life, mainly so that our kids had the experience. I didn't stick with it very long. Dressing in ski suit, sitting in the lodge, sipping a beverage, and watching the skiers was more to my liking. The next adventuresome challenging experience was backpacking and hiking to Havasupai in the Grand Canyon. Wow, somewhere along the trail as I was on my way out of the canyon, I wasn't sure I was going to make it. About the same time a mule train was on their way down. Sitting on one of the mules was a guy, who looked like he should be carrying the mule, looked down at me and said, "Ah, it can't be that bad?" I cannot write what I was thinking!
Probably, the second most adventurous would have to be writing and publishing my memoirs about five years ago. Sure would like another experience like that. It takes such a lot of work. But writing is an adventure in itself, you know not where it will take you.
Right now I am living a new adventure, one day at a time trying to build a new life for myself since my husband went to be with the Lord two and a half years ago. One thing I know from experience, adventures are not always enjoyable, they can, and most often are challenging, but generally, when finished you can say to yourself, "Job well done!"
Defined by Webster, adventuresome is characterized by unknown dangers and risks. That means just getting into your car everyday proves you are adventuresome, doesn't it?

Is Someone Messin With Me?!
Challenge for the day: Write something, and I have. I responded to several e-mails, did some postings on "facebook," and now for the real challenge, The Writing Edge!
Today, I am entertaining thoughts about, Lost and Found or maybe it should be Found but not Lost! Confusing. . .I know I am confused. This is what happened, and it is not the first time.
This is so strange, yesterday afternoon I opened one of the kitchen cabinets that I don't often use. It holds dishes that won't fit in the china cupboard. At first glance I saw a slip of paper in one of the tea cups, wondering what it was, I picked it up and saw a set of numbers on it. All of a sudden it came to me, this is the combination for the safe in the office! I told Dana, my son, several months ago it was missing. He reminded me that he had given it to me to put in a safe place after we had gone through the contents a year or more ago. At that time I could not open the safe at all. Neither the key or combination would work for me. Thought I might have to hire a safe cracker. (a little humor) I don't have thousands of dollars in jewelry or other expensive items, but there are important papers. I purchased the safe as a gift for Dick at one time. Tell me what good is a safe if you can't open it?! Which brings me to the present time. I don't even remember what prompted the thought of going through the safe again. I thought we had left it unlocked, but not the case. So where was the slip of paper with the combination? I know a lot of places where it wasn't. When there is something I cannot find, it drives me nuts. I go on hunting rampages until I find what I am looking for. I checked in every nook and cranny, and was certain it was not in the house. What really gets to me, is the fact I know without doubt, I have been in that cupboard quite a few times. Where was that little slip of paper that was now so prominently displayed?
This is not the first time for something like this to happen to me. It hasn't been all that long ago, I found a paperback recipe book by Peg Bracken, I had been searching for, for several years. And where do you think it was? Right in its proper place with other books of its kind! Can't begin to tell you how many times I had been through all of those books, all to no avail!
How do these things happen? I really don't believe in ghosts! However, makes for good story telling. Dana, told me one time when something of this kind happens to him, he thinks someone who has passed, like his brother, is messin with him. I know what I think and it might surprise you, but what do you think? Is someone messin with me?!

Definitely an Ahhhh, Moment!
Just returned from a two week trip to Lincoln, Nebraska including side trips to Conestoga Lake, Denten, NE, Giltner, NE, as well as a day on each end in Pine, Az. But the main reason for the vacation was my 60Th high school class reunion in Lincoln. ( I know, you are all working on the math.) I will write about reunions at a later date. It is enough now just to say, a good time was had by all.
My sister, Jan joined me in the trip and that way, I didn't have to fly. Not my favorite way to travel, nor hers. We have had a couple of experiences leading to our dislike. I fly only when it's the only way. She, her husband Tom and their three yorkies live in Pine, AZ and that's my reason for stopping there. I leave Max with his buddies, Reggie, Molly and Penny(the yorkies). On leaving I impart to everyone that Max is going to camp. And he really is. Tom takes them on hikes in the forest almost daily. They can bark at the deer and even Lucy, an elk that frequents the area right behind the back fence. Believe it or not they pay little heed to them. As far as they are concerned these little dogs are just a nuisance. Of course, the dogs know when other animals are around before they can be seen, giving them plenty of reason for barking and running the fence line.
The weather in Pine this time of year is great, with cool temperatures and usually includes a slight breeze blowing through the pines. Tom pampers and spoils the dogs with love, I sometimes refer to him as the Pied Piper, because they follow him everywhere. Not at all unusual for all of them to be sitting on the chair with him at one time. For me, my favorite thing to do there, is sitting on the deck with Jan, Tom and all four dogs, having my morning coffee. Believe me, it is definitely an "Ahhhhhhhhhh, moment!

Well, we are now home and it will take Max and I some time to recover from all the activity. Max checked out the back yard and all his favorite places immediately, going first to a little statute fountain. He seemed intrigued with something about it even before we left. After watching him sniffing all around it, I saw what it was that had his fancy. A very tiny little ground squirrel ran out from underneath. He went so fast, I don't think his little feet had time to touch the ground. Max was right behind it, and I was right behind Max. What a sight?! Thankfully the little creature found safe haven in some tree branches on the ground. They were from a tree I had taken down shortly before I left, fearing it might well come down by itself during a monsoon storm while I was gone. Max, not wanting to give up, finally responded to my command of "Leave it! and Come." But it was at his will, not mine if you know what I mean?
Anyway, right now he is doing one of his other favorite things and that is sleeping. This is about his third little nap of the afternoon. My own recovery will be adjusting to the two hour difference in time and enjoying the best part of any vacation and that is sleeping in my own bed tonight!

Adventure -- One Day at a Time
My year of adventure continues one day at a time, and today it started with a trip to Scottsdale for a medical appointment. The report wasn't great, but it was good. My blood pressure 100 over 62? Must be from all the rest I've been getting sitting at the computer these past few weeks.
On the drive there, looking towards the northern horizon, I saw beautiful billowing, vertical, cumulus clouds building up over the desert mountains. They had the appearance of being mountains too, or enormous mounds of whipped cream. They will probably bring rain and storms up north, but there is no rain in the valley desert forecast for awhile.
My first stop back to Awahtukee, the residential area where I live, was The Native New Yorker for lunch. I was starving, having had no breakfast other than coffee that morning. I had been thinking Philly cheese steak sandwich and iced tea every since I decided to eat out. My server was about the age of one of my grandsons and had sweet endearing names for me. It didn't hurt my feelings and he certainly wasn't being condescending. The service and food was good as I expected, but not out of the ordinary for the establishment. It was a four star experience, maybe three due to noise from one of the nearby tables.
There had to be another stop yet, and that was the grocery store. This is truly an unwelcome task for me. But, I've put it off about as long as I can and still have food in the house. Mainly I was in need of fresh fruit. Max and I had our last apple yesterday. I sit in the recliner after peeling the apple and Max sits on the edge of couch. Then I cut off small pieces for each of us. He loves the apple and attention! Anyway, I made my way up and down the aisles not seeing anything I really wanted, and asking myself, "Why are you here?" Tonight when I am unable to come up with anything for supper, I'll remember.
I am actually becoming more observant, especially of people. As I was meandering around the store I saw this guy several times, walking around more aimlessly than I was. What struck me as odd or strange, was he was not exactly a young guy, and he was wearing short shorts! Most men regardless of age, if they were wearing shorts, they were at least to their knees and baggy. You see, now I am part of the men's fashion police!
And this brings me to my next adventure or encounter or whatever. Only one register was open and I was the last one in line. One of the cashiers came out and said he would take me at the next register. I followed. As I struggled with my keys to get the little discount card for him, he asked, "May I see you ID?" You know, for the beer. May I see your ID? All the time I'm still trying to get my keys from my purse. It finally registered what he had said. Do you know how long it has been since anyone asked me that?! I've just been waiting for the time, and when it happened all I could do was stutter and stammer making no sense. The young man sacking groceries had just the hint of a smile! I saw it, and that's okay. We all enjoyed the moment! And I won't forget anytime soon that I was asked verification of my AGE! lOVED IT!
Writing Exercise - - -Rob Parnell's, The Easy Way to Write
This writing exercise was to participate in some people watching and catch little snippets of individuals or small groups, to later write about. It is a study in developing characters for fiction. I've had plenty of time for observing others due to all the problems and wait time I've had with my car. In fact, the setting for my characterization, was in the parking lot of one of those repair shops. This is what I caught in my mind's camera.
I was about fifteen minutes early for my seven-thirty a.m. appointment. Because it was already warm outside, I sat in the car with the door open and the radio playing softly. I had been watching people go inside, and figured they were employees. As I was staring out into space waiting for the clock to move, I caught a glimpse of a man slowly making his way across the drive. I think it was the resemblance to my late husband that kept me intrigued. The man was elderly, walked slowly with the use of a cane. It did not appear it was giving him much support. His stature was heavy and of medium height. He wore a cap, and was dressed in a tee shirt and shorts. There was no one with him, so I assumed he had driven himself. He sat on the bench just outside the door that entered the building lobby. Obviously, he was early too. The man lacked any facial expression, but seemingly deep in thought. He sat with his head bowed, chin on top of his hands that were resting on the crook of his cane. I remember thinking, and wondering what was going through his thoughts. Wondering if perhaps he had something very serious on his mind. Or, was it that he was just tired from having to arise so early, and plainly would prefer to be elsewhere.
The next time I looked his way, he was gone, but returned a short time later, and was seated in the same place. A couple more gentlemen and a woman went inside. Obviously, the office was now open. Joining the others inside, I made arrangements for my car. It took but a short time as they were already familiar with my situation and had read the fax I had sent to them. As I opened the door, crossing the threshold on my way out, I saw the man was still seated on the bench. Looking up at me, we greeted one another and made some comment about having to be there etc. I replied, explaining in a very few words with frustration clearly evident in my voice, why I was there. And if I could, I would gladly use a hammer on the infernal engine light! It brought an immediate response of hearty laughter on his part. Then a car pulled up, he stood and was on his way, leaving me to continue pondering, while waiting for my ride.

Make Your World a Better Place - SMILE
August 3, 2010
Today, I learned something new about myself. Well, maybe I just never gave it much thought before. I have a good sense of humor! In fact, I would stretch that a bit further to include our entire immediate family as having a good sense of humor. And I do look for this trait in others as well. Michelle (daughter) and I were discussing this very thing recently, because we happened to be talking about Darrel (deceased son). We spoke about what a wonderful story teller he was. I venture to say that no one could have heard him tell his story of the trip home from the North Rim of the Canyon when we were all there many years ago, and not be doubled over in laughter. He was with Bob. Bob is like one of the family and he was the main topic of the story. (We love you Bob.)
Grandma Dutton, an extremely hard working, no nonsense kind of person. But what a sense of humor she had. Many were the times I saw her laugh until the tears were rolling down her cheeks. And when she told a story, she had a talent of being able to use accents of the individuals, and make you feel like you were right there. It added immensely to the humor and the story. In fact, she sometimes gave readings for some of the local women"s groups. I'm not putting any of us in the category of a comedian, just the ability to see humor in everyday things and really enjoy laughter, sometimes at our own expense.
This morning, I took the car (about the fourth time) for emissions testing. The last time it failed because, "It wasn't ready." Well, neither was I. Anyway, this time it passed! Oh, Happy Day! I drove it about twenty miles before and maybe that helped, I don't know, just glad it passed. To celebrate I stopped at Paradise Bakery for a bagel and coffee on my way home. I hadn't had breakfast yet. As I was leaving, two gentlemen were standing outside the door talking and when they saw me both reached for and opened their side of the door. I thanked them as I walked out between them and said, "It's not every day I have two good looking men open the door for me." I caught them off guard and then they both laughed as I did. One of them replied still laughing, "We're not referred to that way very often either." I just kept walking with a big smile on my face and I'm sure they did too. Now, I didn't know I was going to say anything at all to them, it was just spur of the moment thought, but I gave them and myself just a little bright spot in our day!
Lord knows, in today"s world we all can afford to do more things in our lives that make us smile! So make it a practice everyday, of giving some of yours away! You'll be glad you did. It is almost unheard of, if you give a smile to someone, that they won't return it. So make your world a better place - SMILE!

There is Stuff, and Then There's More Stuff
Every so often I make the declaration to be on clutter patrol! My kitchen table, and desk catch the most, especially after mail call. I don't know what to do with some of that stuff! Usually I sort the mail out into several stacks as I go through it: l. definitely save, which requires filing, 2. definitely throw away 3. mail received for others and 4. that which does not fall into any of these categories. So when I've finished the table top is completely covered with stuff. I get a lot of junk mail, not only for me, but other family members. And since I'm not sure it is junk, I save it and let them throw away their stuff the next time they come over. But what to do with it until then? Max has stuff too. He has his toys and he generously will share them with me. The only problem is, he doesn't return them to his toy box. Sometimes he will carry some of his stuff outside and leave it there. His preference though is the landing of the stairs. I also have my writing stuff on the computer desk. I am well aware that filing is an excellent strategy and tool to use to control clutter, especially paper clutter. Why am I compelled to keep a hard copy of stuff I write on the computer? I know it is filed there. There is just something about holding that piece of paper in my two hands as I read. I catch a lot of errors that I wouldn't have caught otherwise. How to file this stuff, is always a challenge and conflict? Everyone has stuff in their lives and this is just a small splattering of mine! Maybe the next time I will attack my stuff in the china cupboards, closets, upstairs office, kitchen drawers, or maybe even the garage or yard! What about your stuff?!
I would like to underline the word stuff in the foregoing, but, have to admit I just don't know how. Nothing I've tried seems to work. I tried Ctrl I for Italic too, but that also failed. "Trial and Error" I've used the word "stuff" in context of whatever may be possessed or owned!

I Do It Myself!
You can imagine my frustration this morning, if you've read my two previous blogs, when my car did not pass emissions test again. This time, to quote the tech., "It isn'tready." What now? The car's computer needs to reset. I understand that, somewhat like a PC has to sometimes reboot. It requires starting, warming the engine, stopping and allowing it to cool down. In other words, normal driving. But it has been two days! When I called mechanic back this morning, his advice was to continue driving it in a normal fashion over the weekend and give it another try the first of the week.
When I declared this to be my year of adventure. This is not what I had in mind, I was thinking more in terms of a globetrotter, traveling to unfamiliar, faraway and exciting places. However, as we all know, every single day holds adventure for each of us. It is all in how we perceive it.
Dr. Wayne Dyer, author and lecturer, often refers to Living in the moment as does other noted philosophical self help individuals. They profess the teachings that instead of being so preoccupied with the past and the future, we focus on the most important time, which is right now. By next week this little episode I have been going through will be nothing but a memory. It surely hasn't been worth the frustration and anxiety I've experienced or the time I have given it.
Long before I ever heard the expression "living in the moment" I had made the discovery of accepting that person I saw in the mirror each day. This discovery was made after brousing old photos, and thinking, how much better I looked in the old photos than at that time. I came to the conclusion, today is your day, and it doesn't get any better than this. Tomorrow you will be a day older, and then a week older, before you know it, it will be a couple of years. I don't want to look at a photo two or three years down the line and think, why didn't I appreciate myself then!
So as far as this little challengeI am experiencing right now, I will accept it as a learning experience. I will appreciate me and the fact that I am still leaning new things. And to quote one of my grandaughters as a toddler, "I do it myself!"

Life after the Light is off
The saga continues, repairs were made and THE INFERNAL ENGINE LIGHT is off. You're thinking I better get back to emissions before it happens again, aren't you? The tech called about noon to let me know my car was ready to go, the problem had been diagnosed and repairs taken care of. He said, " I understand you brought it in because it had failed emissions?" He advised me not to take it back for at least twenty-four hours and maybe I should wait a couple of days. It takes a certain amount of time for the computer to readjust itself and the engine needs to be completely cooled down. I'm glad he told me, because I would have driven there directly, And, you can imagine how disgruntled I would have been if it had failed!
Now I'll clue you into the rest of my day. My friend brought me home after I left the car. When we got back she said she would come in for a few minutes to see Max. He was so excited because he hadn't seen her for awhile. Coming in, I had placed my purse and glasses on the hall table and we all sat on the stairs. That is Max's favorite place. He keeps his toys on the landing (not a safe place for me, I know). We chatted for awhile, and she had to get on her way and I had chores to do as well. My "To Do" list began with cleaning bathrooms, oh joy! I started with the upstairs guest bath first. I was running water in the tub to wet it before spraying the cleaner. I reached in to push the stopper down, and turned the shower on instead! Since I was looking down, the back of my head and shoulders were soaking wet. Not happy! But I did finish what I had planned for the day and just in time. The phone rang with message to pick up the car. I Phoned my friend, she said she was on her way. In the meantime I set about gathering my things. Remembering I did not put my purse in its regular spot, went to the living room to get it. I Came back to the kitchen to tell Max I was leaving, and checked for my sun glasses. I told myself, "you left them right there with your purse when you came in." Rechecked my steps but they weren't there. Then I Looked by the computer and the kitchen desk, no sun glasses. It is rare for me to go outside, without my glasses, even in the winter. Looked out and my ride had arrived. After crossing the threshold, I looked down as I shut the door, checking to make certain it was locked. Low and behold, there they were, I had been holding my glasses the entire time!
Talked to one of my sons this afternoon telling him what I had done, and after he finished laughing at me, I asked, "So, do you think I'm losing it?" "NO, not at all, mom. When that happens to me, I always think that someone who has passed is messing with me." I replied, " that being the case dad and your brother are having a great time at my expense. We both had another good laugh! Laughter is good anytime, but after stressing for several days it helps put things back in it's proper perspective. Sounds good anyway?!

Infernal Engine Light-2
Last night I went to sleep asking myself the question: "When did they begin putting this particular computer in cars?" You know, it tells you, the door is ajar, or check engine oil, the coolant level is low, etc.. It never tells you anything good, like, "Whoopee, your running great! Searching back through our old cars, there were none before 1984. We had a conversion van from then until it went swimming in the canal (another story) and we purchased the Labaron Convertible. That was probably early nineties, and they did not have an engine light. So, it had to have been the first Cadillac we owned. Don't think we more than drove it off the lot before it's light came on, and it was new! I remember how frantic I felt, and took it in immediately. The tech did not seem at all concerned, just rather nonchalant about the whole thing. Now, I understand why, that infernal light comes on at a whims notice, always causes consternation and anxiety, and is a delight to that money syphon thing I've spoken about. Before that computer light, what did we do? WE DID NOTHING!
I fully understand the problems of pollution caused by emissions of millions of cars on the road. But I do question the authenticity of the seriousness of message, "Check engine soon!" That engine light on my car is now on again, less than two weeks after repairs. You can't tell me, that whatever is causing it to be on now, wasn't there before! It doesn't take a genius to realize what is going on. My car has a hundred-fifty five thousand miles on it. Of course, parts are wearing. I can predict with certainty, this infernal light will continue intermittently, from now until I do replace the car! It has a political name, called planned obsolescence!

Infernal Engine Light
Several of you have inquired about my car and what happened? It's a debatable topic of concern. This transmission company had my car for eight days. They did not rebuild the transmission, just repaired the problem to the tune of $2900.! I knew this beforehand. The cost was 90% labor as most car repairs are. That's something I've learned and come to accept, over the past nine years that I've been taking care of it. Any of the cars before that, Dick always looked after, even doing what repairs he could. I, on the other hand have relied on the dealership except for the last couple of times. I was just a little disgruntled when my tech told me I needed to buy a new car!
When I first took it in after failing the test, I took it to Salem Boys Auto Repair. We had used them in the past and the company has been in business in Phoenix many years, are well known, and have the reputation of honesty. After checking emission test results, they recommended Tri City Transmissions, because the work that had to be done might be out of their realm. Taking their advice, I made the call for the other company and set up an appointment. After taking the car to them, it was a few days before they got back to me as to their diagnosis and what the charges would be. I had my son call and let them explain it once again. Only after being reassured did I give my okay for the repairs.
Finally, more than a week later, the call came that they had finished. It was none too soon for me. After I arrived they went over all the paper work, saying that there were so many signatures I needed to make, it would feel like buying a new house. It was a slight exaggeration. On the way home, I could tell absolutely no difference in how the car was operating than before. But I figured that going in. For the next few days I was so busy with errands that it became my excuse for not returning to the emissions place yet. After all they gave me 60 days to have repairs made. Well, that was another big mistake on my part because that infernal engine light is on again, as of yesterday!
If I could, I would take a hammer to that idiot light! One more lesson learned the "hard way."
Procrastinating is never a good thing.
You know my fear is, that yet something else has gone awry. It could also be that it is nothing at all. We'll see what happens tomorrow. In the meantime I will remain calm and positive. And if you believe that, like the song, "I have some Arizona beach front property to sell you."

Fast Writing
Given the talent, I would request the inspiration to emulate writers like Andy Rooney, Erma Bombeck or Clay Thompson. They take the simplest topics and make them interesting. All three include humor and there is no hidden meaning, you know exactly where they are coming from. My favorite of Erma"s was the title given one of her books: "Why is the Grass Always Greener Over the Septic Tank?" For Clay Thompson an often used quote, "Oh, you people," when for the upteenth time he has to once again explain something. In case you are not familiar with him, he writes a daily column for The Arizona Republic newspaper. Clay also referes to his superiors (editors) as his masters! Andy Rooney, is the greatest in my opinion. Anyone can relate to his topics at the end of 60 Minutes TV program. My favorite is "The god of dents, dings and money syphons." I admit , I copied the title and wrote my own version (giving him credit of course.) It's in my journal somewhere. I recall one evening he used his time talking about what he had in his pocket? How can anyone make something so simple, meaningful to millions of viewers. They use an idea everyone can relate to, and make it interesting and fun! They have my vote at being the best in what they do!
Yesterday morning, I sat looking at the blank page and couldn't think of a thing to write. This is where I struggle. "What to write?" So, I am compelled to share this recent experience.
I subscribe to "Easy Way to Write" web site and newsletter edited and managed by author and teacher, Rob Parnell. I had lost this connection and only recently found it again, after perusing my writing folder. It gererally contains a short writing assignment and yesterday's lesson was "Fast Writing." I tried it out and was startled and amazed at my results! The directions were as follows:
Use a relaxing technique, like deep breathing. Visualize words appearing on the page, do not try to read them, think of a color and your lucky numbser, write them on the top of the page along with a name of a character, open a book and select a word at random, write it alongside the other three. Without thinking begin writing, don't stop for ten minutes. Do not edit, do not go back, don't look at the page. Write in a trance, think story and the four words. Don't stop!
I was so surprised by the results, I just sat here at the computer startled and amazed! What I had written actually made sense and something I could continue at a later time as a short story. AMAZING! I only had to go over half way aroung the globe to Australia, to find this and other writing experiences just as good, and they are free! The newsletter always concludes with, "Keep Writing!"
Yesterday morning, I sat looking at the blank page and couldn't think of a thing to write. This is where I struggle. "What to write?" So, I am compelled to share this recent experience.

Money syphon god
This is rather a long story, but here goes. Every year, in Arizona, we are required to have cars emissions tested based on age of auto etc. Well, my cadillac is nine years old with a hundred fifty five thousand miles to its credit. And I am happy to say, we(my husband and I) put those miles on it over the years. There are too many trips to name them all, but included a trip from coast to coast and enumerable trips to Nebraska (home state). In the past few months there has been two trips, Nebraska in May and Vegas the end of June. The engine still hummms, great mileage on the road, all in all exceptional condition for it's age, much like me, ha, ha! Couldn't help myself.
Just before leaving for Vegas I received registration information and wouldn't you know, it had to be tested again. It passed a year ago, so shouldn't be a problem. Much to my chagrin, as I read through it, at the bottom it stated, "If the engine light is on, the car will fail the test." The engine light has been on for more than six months. When it first came on, I had taken it to the dealership for service and they told me to buy a new car!
Knowing this, I was still required to take the car for testing anyway, so they could tell me what to do next! After which, they gave me paper work as to what the problem was. It had to do with PO741 Torque Converter Clutch performance, it could mean it was stuck off! Whatever: It certainly does not affect the operation of the car, not in my opion anyway. They gave me sixty days in which to have the car repaired and then retested. I've been two days without a car(it's in the shop)my savings account is dwindling. Did I say I just purchased new appliances before this happened? Well, I did.
My dishwasher has been out for about a year, but then there is only me, so not a big deal, and then the day before leaving for Vegas my washing machine began gushing water out on the floor. For the past couple of years, you could only use one setting without this happening. Yes, I procrastinated and paid the price, so to speak! Because the washer and dryer had been purchased at the same time, I decided on replacing both. My timing could not have been worse. Had this all happened a month ago, I could have received tax credit or whatever the government was offering for replacing with energy saving appliances. And would you believe, the very same day after purchasing three new appliances, I returned home only to find my microwave oven would not heat?! It is still waiting for replacement.
A few years ago barrowing a topic by Andy Rooney on Sixty Minutes, I wrote a piece about the god of dents, dings and money syphons. Well, this is a prime example. How is it, when one thing goes wrong, or falls apart, there becomes an entire series? I can tell you, it's the money syphon god, and he is drinking me dry! I give up. . .

Here goes, day 2 on the Edge. Amazing what one can learn by going to the source for information. For me, a video right on the first page of the blogger web site. Duh! I would rather spend hours of trial and error, addressing the problem as a puzzle, when a few minutes would have solved it at the beginning. Anyway, just put in address: http://www.blogger.com. Click on view blog, hold your breath while doing this. If it works, slowly breathe out. Otherwise say a few words not allowed on this page and let me know in the comment section. Ohhh, if you didn't get to the site, guess you wouldn't be able too. Just send e-mail.
I thank you all for your responses, and if you didn't respond, I thank you too, just for reading it. I received an e-mail this morning from a friend and colleague of bygone days, and whose opinion I respect, applauding me for learning new things. I've had my year of "Jubilee" (another story) and I've declared this my year of adventure. My grand daughter will be happy to know this because nearing of end of 2009, she asked her mom, "What will grandma do now?" "What do you mean?" Well, if this is the end of her year of Jubilee, "What is she going to do?" I recall, her mom's response. "Maybe it can be her year of adventure!" And I have declared it to be so, it will be my quest and pursuit, giving me purpose. What could be more adventuresome than stepping out on the edge and making myself so vulnerable?

Lost in Space
I knew it was too good to be true! After finishing what I considered my first blog and clicked on "Edit Posts" like the wind, it was gone! Only thing remaining was the title! Let's see what I can remember.
Seeing is believing. After spending untold amount of time last night setting up my blog account with Google it was to no avail. Following the directions were relatively simple enough. It wasn't until I left the site and tried to return that there was a problem. Nothing I tried would take me back. Checking my e-mail, I was pleasantly surprised to find a confirmation for my account, with a link in case you forget your password etc., including directions to print it out, which I did. Like my other trial and errors, it also failed telling me the URL had expired! Expired, I only received it minutes ago!
Promising myself to return first thing in the morning, I left it and went to bed. Well, here I am first thing in the morning. First try, same as last night. I decided to return to Google and the word "blog" and try again. Finding the site I wanted, one click of the mouse brought me right here to "The Writing Edge." Now you know why it is entitled, "The Writing Edge!"
Holding my breath, I will click on PUBLISH POST!
